Cotswold Summer - Gate and Meadow Cranesbill"Cotswold Summer – Gate and Meadow Cranesbill"

In summer the waysides in the Cotswolds are filled with a succession of wonderful wildflowers and grasses – first billowing swathes of white cow parsley in early summer, mixed with the fresh greens of grass flowers, often sparkling in sunshine. Then just as one regrets their fading they are followed by the deep blues of meadow cranesbill and striking hogweed silhouettes. Later come the gentle mauves of scabious and knapweed and the changing of the grasses to golden shades.

I love to capture this fleeting beauty in my paintings. This picture is high summer, with meadow cranesbill at its best. The viewer stands in the dappled shade before a peaceful scene, typical of the Cotswolds around where we live. Cotswold stone adds a lovely contrast to the rich colours of the wayside and an old gate leads the eye to fields and trees beyond…
